Description
Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny ornamental vines, bushes, or trees.
The vine species grow anywhere from 1 to 12 m (3 to 40 ft.) tall, scrambling over other plants with their spiky thorns. They are evergreen where rainfall occurs all year, or deciduous if there is a dry season. The leaves are alternate, simple ovate-acuminate, 4–13 cm long and 2–6 cm broad. The actual flower of the plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts with the bright colours associated with the plant, including pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow.
Many of today's bougainvillea are the result of interbreeding among only three out of the eighteen South American species recognised by botanists. Currently, there are over 300 varieties of bougainvillea around the world. Because many of the hybrids have been crossed over several generations, it is difficult to identify their respective origins.

Love Bougainvillea bushes, they are so beautiful. Beautiful image Michaela.

Congratulations on your feature Mik. Such a beautiful display of this vibrant plant. Shame they can be so prolific and messy, not to mention the thorns. We have just got rid of one. I love to see images of them though and drool over other people's photos, like this one.
Michaela Perryman replied:
Thanks Elaine, yes I think they are great, but would not have another one in the garden

What a fine piece of artwork and I am happy to announce that this beauty has been chosen for a feature on the homepage of our WFS group. Congratulations for this accomplishment. Well deserved!
